The US Secretary of Defense has reaffirmed America’s commitment to maintaining cooperation with allied armed groups in Syria, with Kurdish-led militias playing a central role.
“We have stood alongside the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) for some time, and that cooperation will continue. We have a good relationship with this force, and that relationship will not change,” Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced on December 11, during a visit to Japan.
Austin added that the Pentagon is closely monitoring the "unpredictable" developments in Syria, has not decided to alter its military presence, and is maintaining close discussions with regional partners. The Pentagon’s top priority in Syria remains protecting US personnel and preventing the resurgence of the Islamic State (ISIS).
The SDF was established in 2015, primarily comprising Kurdish militia fighters. It also includes Arab fighters and members of Christian communities. The backbone of the SDF is the People’s Protection Units (YPG), a Kurdish militia formed in 2012 that took control of large parts of northeastern Syria while the Syrian government focused on combating rebel forces in the west.
When ISIS launched widespread offensives in Syria in 2014, the YPG proved to be one of the most effective forces in countering the militant group’s advances. This effectiveness led to US support for the YPG and later the SDF.
Following the overthrow of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government by a coalition of rebel forces led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) on December 8, and the subsequent initiation of a transitional government in Damascus, several areas under SDF control came under attack.
Arab militias with pro-Turkish affiliations, operating primarily along the Turkey-Syria border, launched assaults on the SDF-controlled city of Manbij. Meanwhile, the HTS-led coalition advanced into eastern Syria, seizing Deir ez-Zor from the SDF and forcing the group to retreat to the eastern banks of the Euphrates River.
Mazloum Abdi, commander of the SDF, announced that the group had reached a ceasefire agreement in Manbij, brokered by the US. SDF fighters are withdrawing from the area as part of the accord. Abdi expressed hope for broader ceasefires with rival factions across Syria, followed by political processes to stabilize the country.
