Trudeau Carries Chair Out of Parliament as Leadership Transition Begins

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was seen carrying his chair out of the parliamentary chamber after his party selected a new leader to replace him later this week.

Following a March 10 meeting at Canada’s Parliament with newly elected Liberal Party leader Mark Carney, Trudeau officially began the transition process to hand over power.

A Reuters photographer captured the moment Trudeau carried his chair out of the House of Commons following his meeting with Carney—a symbolic gesture marking the end of his decade-long leadership.

A widely shared photo showed Trudeau playfully sticking out his tongue at photographers as he moved the chair, drawing both praise and criticism on social media. Some appreciated his humor, while others accused him of a "final act of theft" by the outgoing 53-year-old leader.

Under Canadian parliamentary rules, outgoing lawmakers are allowed to purchase a replica of the chair they used in the chamber. Trudeau has not commented on the reason for taking the chair or where he plans to put it.

End of an Era

Trudeau will remain prime minister until the official transition to Carney, expected midweek, according to Liberal Party officials.

Over nearly a decade in power, Trudeau led Canada through the COVID-19 pandemic, renegotiated a critical trade deal with the U.S., and navigated global instability amid the Russia-Ukraine war.

However, his administration’s approval ratings declined sharply in the second half of 2024 due to mounting economic challenges, including inflation and a housing crisis, which weakened the Liberal Party’s standing. The situation escalated after U.S. President Donald Trump took office and imposed new trade tariffs on Canada, increasing economic pressure.

On January 6, Trudeau announced his resignation as Liberal Party leader, paving the way for a successor.

What’s Next for Trudeau?

Trudeau has not yet revealed his post-political plans. However, his close friend and Immigration Minister Marc Miller said the outgoing prime minister remains in high spirits.

"He’s in a really good place mentally and is genuinely excited for the next chapter of his life," Miller said. "I think he’ll take some time to relax. But we’ll see him back soon in a new role, continuing to fight for his ideals and for the people of Canada."
