Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has warned that U.S. President Donald Trump is seriously considering annexing Canada to gain control over the country’s vast mineral resources.
Trump’s Alleged Annexation Plans
Speaking at the Canada-U.S. Economic Summit in Toronto on February 7, Trudeau told business leaders that Trump sees Canadian mineral reserves as a key target and believes "the easiest way to get them is by annexing Canada."
His remarks were made during a closed-door session, but a live microphone picked up the conversation and broadcast it to the 100 business leaders in attendance.
The White House has not yet responded to the claim.
Canada Prepares for "Long-Term Political Challenges"
Earlier in his public address, Trudeau warned that Canada faces a difficult and prolonged political period with the U.S. under Trump’s leadership. He emphasized the need to strengthen economic and trade relationships outside the U.S. in the coming years.
“We don’t just need to survive the next 30 days or the next few months; we need to grow stronger over the next four years,” he said.
Trudeau stressed that Canada must be ready to counter potential U.S. tariffs in the short term while also preparing for a less cooperative long-term relationship with Washington.
Canadian Officials Push Back
Business leaders at the summit were quick to react.
"The Prime Minister made it clear to influential figures that Trump is genuinely eyeing these resources," said Flavio Volpe, President of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association.
However, he clarified that Trudeau was not suggesting an actual annexation was imminent, but rather highlighting Trump’s lack of respect for Canadian sovereignty.
“What he’s saying is that President Trump approaches these matters with little regard for Canada’s independence—worse than what we’ve typically expected from a U.S. president.”
Several Canadian ministers also strongly rejected the notion.
- Trade Minister Anita Anand vowed that Canada "will not accept any interference beyond the 49th parallel", referring to the U.S.-Canada border.
- Labor Minister Steven MacKinnon reinforced Canada’s sovereignty: “Canada is a free, independent nation that will determine its own destiny. We will always defend this country, its people, and our right to self-determination.”
Trump Suggests Canada as "51st State"
Earlier this week, President Trump revived his claim that Canada should become "America’s 51st state" to avoid tariffs and receive better protection from the U.S.
He argued that the U.S. subsidizes Canada "by hundreds of billions of dollars" but could instead manufacture everything it currently imports from its northern neighbor.
Shortly after a phone call with Trudeau, Trump announced a temporary suspension of planned tariffs on Canadian goods.
