President Donald Trump’s approval rating has declined one month into his term, as growing concerns over Washington’s tariff policies weigh on public sentiment, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll.
The national survey, conducted over six days with 4,145 respondents and concluding on February 18, found that 44% of Americans approve of Trump’s job performance in his first month in office.
This marks a decline from 47% approval in a January 20-21 poll conducted immediately after his inauguration. Support for Trump dipped to 45% in a January 24-26 survey before settling at its current level.
Meanwhile, Trump’s disapproval rating has climbed to 51%, a 10-point increase from the immediate post-inauguration poll.
Concerns Over Economy Weigh on Trump’s Support
Despite the decline, Trump maintains strong approval on immigration policy, with 47% of respondents backing his approach, including his pledge to intensify deportations of undocumented migrants. This figure has remained largely unchanged since January.
However, economic concerns are rising. 53% of Americans now believe the country is on the wrong economic path, a 10-point increase from the January 24-26 poll. Public approval of Trump’s handling of the economy has dropped from 43% to 39%.
Although Trump’s economic approval rating remains higher than his predecessor Joe Biden, who left office with 34% approval, his current rating is far lower than the 53% approval he enjoyed during February 2017, his first month in office during his previous term.
Only 32% of Americans in the latest survey believe Trump is effectively controlling inflation, underscoring public frustration with rising costs, a critical issue for voters.
Tariffs Fuel Inflation Concerns
Recent U.S. Labor Department data showed consumer prices in January surged at their highest rate in nearly 18 months, as Americans grappled with higher costs for goods and services.
Public concern over inflation has intensified following Trump’s February 1 announcement of new tariffs on imports from China, Canada, and Mexico.
While the administration delayed tariffs on Mexico and Canada for one month, Trump has set March 12 as the start date for new tariffs on imported steel and aluminum. The White House has also directed officials to prepare retaliatory tariffs against other countries.
According to the Reuters/Ipsos poll, 54% of Americans oppose the new import tariffs, while 41% support them. However, tariffs specifically targeting Chinese goods have a narrow margin of support, with 49% in favor and 47% opposed.
With economic uncertainty rising, Trump’s approval ratings could face further pressure as Americans assess the impact of his trade policies.
