Analysts warn that Apple may not escape the latest wave of Trump’s China tariffs as easily as it did during his first term.
At midnight on February 4 (U.S. time), President Donald Trump’s 10% tariff on all Chinese imports officially took effect, putting Apple in a risky financial position, according to Business Insider.
Apple Faces New Political & Market Realities
Jacob Bourne, a tech analyst at EMARKETER, notes:
“We are facing a new political and market landscape, and there’s no guarantee Apple will receive the same exemptions as before.”
95% of Apple’s Top-Selling Products Are Made in China
- According to Forbes, 95% of Apple’s most popular products—including iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks—are still manufactured in China.
- The new 10% tariff means either Apple absorbs the cost or passes it on to consumers, analysts predict.
- It remains unclear how Apple CEO Tim Cook plans to respond.
Could Apple Expand U.S. Production to Win Exemptions?
William Kerwin, an analyst at Morningstar, suggests:
“Apple expanding production in the U.S. could be part of a deal to secure tariff exemptions.”
This contrasts with the optimism on Wall Street before Trump took office. Gene Munster, co-founder of Deepwater Asset Management, previously believed that Apple would continue receiving "special treatment" under Trump 2.0.
Apple’s Past Escape from Tariffs Under Trump
In 2018, when Trump first imposed broad tariffs on Chinese imports, Apple managed to avoid major financial hits.
- Washington Post reports that Tim Cook personally lobbied the Trump White House to exempt Apple’s key products from tariffs.
- Cook reportedly warned U.S. officials that tariffs would raise iPhone, Mac, and iPad prices and hurt Apple’s business.
Now, with Trump back in power and tariffs in full effect, Apple may have to find new ways to navigate the trade war—or risk higher prices and lower profits in its biggest market.
