In a significant shift from President Donald Trump’s recent attacks, his special envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a “brave leader” following their meeting in Kyiv.

"A long and intense day with Ukraine’s senior leadership. I had extensive and productive discussions with President Volodymyr Zelensky, a courageous leader facing immense challenges in a country at war, as well as his talented national security team," Kellogg wrote on X on February 21.

The positive remarks came after Kellogg met Zelensky in Kyiv to discuss efforts to end the war between Ukraine and Russia.

Zelensky Welcomes “Restored Hope”

President Zelensky described the meeting as a step toward renewed hope, emphasizing Ukraine’s need for “strong and effective” commitments from Washington.

"We discussed the situation on the front lines, the urgent need to free all Ukrainian prisoners of war held in Russia, and the importance of a clear and reliable security framework to ensure that this war never happens again," Zelensky posted on X.

The exchange of positive statements between Zelensky and Kellogg stood in stark contrast to Trump’s recent verbal attacks against the Ukrainian leader.

Trump’s Sharp Criticism of Zelensky

In the past week, President Trump has escalated his criticism of Zelensky, calling him a “unelected dictator” and accusing him of handling the war poorly.

Trump has also questioned the legitimacy of Zelensky’s leadership, arguing that Ukraine failed to hold presidential elections despite his term technically ending in May 2024. The U.S. president further claimed Zelensky’s approval rating is just 4%, though he did not cite a source.

Zelensky dismissed Trump’s accusations, stating that the U.S. president is “living in Russia’s disinformation space.”

Tensions between the two leaders escalated after Ukraine was excluded from the high-level U.S.-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia, despite discussions focusing on ending the war in Ukraine.

Diplomatic Uncertainty

The contradiction between Kellogg’s praise and Trump’s criticism raises questions about U.S. policy toward Ukraine under Trump’s administration.

While Trump is pushing for peace talks with Russia, his diplomatic team appears to be engaging Kyiv more constructively.
