The Trump administration is moving forward with a sweeping effort to remove FBI officials and Justice Department prosecutors involved in investigations related to the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot and former President Donald Trump himself.
According to CNN, dozens of FBI agents and analysts who worked on cases tied to the Capitol attack, as well as those involved in probes related to Trump's handling of classified documents, could be dismissed as early as the night of January 31.
Interim leaders at the Justice Department have spent the past week compiling a list of personnel whom Trump sees as adversarial. Many FBI agents and analysts have been warned that they may be forced to resign or face termination.
Sources familiar with the situation say at least 10 prosecutors working on cases related to the Capitol riot have already had their contracts terminated as of January 31. Within the FBI, at least six senior officials have been ordered to retire, resign, or face termination by February 3.
These dismissals reflect how quickly Trump’s administration is moving to carry out his promise of retribution against the Justice Department and FBI, which he has repeatedly accused of being weaponized against him.
Trump has harshly criticized federal agents over the court-approved search of his Mar-a-Lago resort and the prosecution of individuals who stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
A Rapid Purge at the DOJ
The Justice Department’s internal shakeup began last week, when veteran prosecutors were informed they would be reassigned to a new task force focused on immigration enforcement and sanctuary cities—jurisdictions that limit cooperation with federal deportation efforts.
Several of these seasoned attorneys resigned rather than accept the reassignment, which was widely seen as a move to push them out.
The purge at the FBI and DOJ marks one of the most aggressive personnel shakeups in recent U.S. history, aligning with Trump’s long-stated goal of removing officials he views as obstacles to his agenda.
