Trump and Zelensky Meet Briefly at Pope Francis’ Funeral

President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met briefly in Vatican City on April 26, marking their first direct encounter since a heated exchange earlier this year at the White House.

Sergiy Nykyforov, a spokesperson for President Zelensky, confirmed that the two leaders spoke privately for about 15 minutes before the funeral Mass for Pope Francis began at St. Peter’s Square.

“The meeting was brief but constructive,” Nykyforov said. “Both leaders agreed to continue discussions later today, and their teams are coordinating for a follow-up meeting.”

Steven Cheung, White House communications director, described the conversation as “very productive” and said further details would be released soon.

Trump and Zelensky attended the funeral seated about ten chairs apart in the front row. Their private meeting came at a delicate time: Trump has recently urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to halt attacks on Ukraine, while also placing blame on Zelensky for the ongoing bloodshed.

In recent comments, Trump suggested that Zelensky should accept concessions to end the war—including recognizing Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014, as Russian territory. Zelensky has firmly rejected any proposal that involves giving up Crimea.

Upon arriving in Rome on April 25, Trump had called for direct talks between the Russian and Ukrainian leaders, stating that negotiations were “very close” to a breakthrough.

“They’ve agreed on most major points, and now it’s time for a high-level meeting to finalize the deal,” Trump said.

In addition to his meeting with Zelensky, Trump also spoke with dozens of other world leaders gathered at St. Peter’s Basilica, discussing topics ranging from global trade to his recently announced tax proposals.
