President Donald Trump has vowed to impose new tariffs on computer chips and semiconductors in an effort to force manufacturers to relocate production to the United States.
Speaking at Trump National Doral Miami, the president said he would soon announce tariffs targeting overseas chip manufacturing.
"In the near future, we will impose tariffs on the production of computer chips, semiconductors, and pharmaceuticals abroad to bring these essential industries back to America," Trump declared.
Trump’s Plan: High Tariffs to Push Companies Back to the U.S.
Trump stressed that he wants semiconductor and chip makers—critical components in high-end electronics and AI technologies—to build factories in the U.S. rather than rely on overseas manufacturing.
“They won’t want to pay tariffs of 25%, 50%, or even 100%,” Trump said. “If you don’t want to pay, or if you want to avoid tariffs, you have to build your factories in America.”
Criticizing Biden’s Semiconductor Subsidies
Trump also took aim at the Biden administration, criticizing its use of taxpayer money to subsidize semiconductor manufacturing in the U.S. He called it a wasteful policy and claimed that many of the companies receiving subsidies do not actually need financial assistance.
“Some of these companies are just going to take the money and expand operations overseas,” Trump warned.
While the U.S. remains the global leader in chip design, most manufacturing still takes place abroad, particularly in Taiwan, home to TSMC, which produces the high-end chips essential for AI development.
"They abandoned us and went to Taiwan. We want them back, and we don’t want to hand them billions of dollars to do it," Trump said.
Taiwan Responds: U.S.-Taiwan Partnership is "Mutually Beneficial"
In response to Trump’s remarks, Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs defended the close U.S.-Taiwan tech cooperation, calling it a win-win for both sides.
"The semiconductor and tech industries of Taiwan and the U.S. complement each other, creating a mutually beneficial business model. We will continue to monitor U.S. policies closely," Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs said in a statement to Reuters.
