Trump Appoints Robert Kennedy Jr. as U.S. Secretary of Health

President-elect Donald Trump announced that Robert F. Kennedy Jr., known for his skepticism of vaccines, will be the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services.

"I am thrilled to announce that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will serve as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services," Trump posted on social media platform X on November 14, stating that Kennedy Jr. will "make America great and healthy again."

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) oversees key agencies like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), as well as Medicare and Medicaid programs that provide health insurance for low-income individuals, seniors aged 65 and older, and people with disabilities.

"The safety and health of the American people are the most crucial responsibilities of any administration, and HHS will play a major role in ensuring protection from harmful chemicals, pollutants, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and food additives, which contribute to the nation's escalating health crisis," Trump emphasized. Kennedy Jr. has proposed overhauling hundreds of positions at NIH and tightening oversight of the FDA.

"The FDA’s war against public health is about to end," he posted on X in late October, claiming the 18,000-employee agency has aggressively restricted the availability of peptides, raw milk, stem cells, and other products. "If you work at the FDA and are part of this corrupt agency, I have two messages: one, preserve records, and two, prepare your luggage."

Earlier this month, Kennedy Jr. indicated he would recommend removing fluoride from public water supplies, alleging it could contribute to bone issues and cancer despite a lack of definitive evidence.

Kennedy Jr., a former environmental lawyer with significant prominence, has faced criticism for spreading debunked claims linking vaccines to autism. He opposed lockdown measures during the Covid-19 pandemic and has been accused of disseminating misinformation about the virus. He also served as president of Children's Health Defense, a nonprofit known for promoting anti-vaccine messages.

At age 70, Kennedy Jr. is the son of former U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and the nephew of late President John F. Kennedy, both prominent figures within the Democratic Party. In April 2023, he announced his candidacy as a Democratic presidential contender before transitioning to an independent bid. On August 23, Kennedy Jr. ended his campaign and shifted his support to Trump.
