Trump Clashes with Medvedev Over Iran and Nuclear Threats
WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump lashed out at former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Sunday, criticizing the Kremlin official for casually raising the specter of nuclear weapons amid the deepening Israel-Iran conflict.
The war of words came just one day after the U.S. launched airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites using B-2 stealth bombers, marking the first direct American military intervention in the 12-day conflict. In response, Medvedev accused Washington of failing to halt Iran’s uranium enrichment and warned that some countries might now be willing to supply Tehran with nuclear warheads.
“Iran's leadership will only grow stronger in the face of Washington’s actions,” Medvedev wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Some nations are prepared to directly supply Iran with nuclear warheads.” He also argued that most countries around the world opposed the actions of both the U.S. and Israel, and mocked Trump’s past ambition for a Nobel Peace Prize, saying, “He can forget about that now—he’s dragged America into another war.”
Trump fired back in a Truth Social post, demanding clarification. “Did I just hear that former Russian President Medvedev casually used the 'N-word' (Nuclear) and claimed he and others might supply nuclear warheads to Iran?” Trump wrote. “This needs to be clarified immediately. The word ‘nuclear’ should never be tossed around lightly.”
Medvedev responded, saying Russia had no intention of arming Iran with nuclear weapons. “Unlike Israel, Russia is a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty,” he noted. “But that doesn’t mean other nations won’t make their own decisions.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin also weighed in on Sunday, condemning the U.S. airstrikes on Iran as “unprovoked aggression” and a “blatant violation of international law.”
The Iran-Israel conflict erupted on June 13 when Israeli forces launched preemptive strikes on Tehran’s nuclear and missile infrastructure. Iran responded with a campaign of retaliatory missile attacks. Over 430 people have been killed and more than 3,500 injured in Iran, while Israel has reported 25 deaths and more than 2,500 injuries.
Amid escalating tensions, President Trump announced early Monday that Israel and Iran had reached a phased ceasefire agreement. The deal, which went into effect later the same day, aims to end what he called the “12-Day War.”
