Trump Confident U.S. Will Acquire Greenland

President Donald Trump has reignited discussions about Greenland, expressing optimism that the U.S. will gain control of the icy island in the name of "global freedom."

"I think we’ll end up buying Greenland," President Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on January 25. "I believe the people of Greenland want to be with America."

"I don’t know what Denmark will demand," he added. "But if they don’t agree to let the U.S. acquire Greenland, I’d say they’re not being friendly, because our intention to buy Greenland is to protect the free world."

Trump emphasized that acquiring Greenland is tied to global security. "I think we’ll get Greenland because this is about world freedom," he said. "America has the capability to bring them freedom. Denmark doesn’t."

Trump’s remarks come after a tense 45-minute phone call last week with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who reiterated that Greenland "is not for sale." Greenland Premier Múte Egede also stated that decisions about the island’s land use are "a matter for Greenland," though he expressed a desire for closer cooperation with the U.S. on defense and mining.

Trump first floated the idea of purchasing the world’s largest island in 2019, arguing that U.S. control of Greenland was "essential" for global security. Located on the shortest route between North America and Europe, Greenland holds strategic importance for the U.S. It has been a self-governing territory of Denmark since 1814, covering an area of about 2.16 million square kilometers and home to roughly 57,000 residents.

Greenland is believed to be rich in natural resources, including iron ore, lead, zinc, diamonds, gold, rare earth elements, uranium, and oil. Most of these resources remain untapped due to 80% of the island being covered in ice. Additionally, research indicates that the surrounding seabed holds significant oil reserves. Since 1967, various U.S. administrations have explored or proposed deals with Denmark to acquire Greenland on at least four occasions.

Trump’s claim that the people of Greenland "want to be with America" left many residents puzzled. A fishing boat captain in Kapisillit welcomed the idea of a visit from Trump but firmly stated, "Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders."

Kaaleeraq Ringsted, an elder at a local church, called Trump’s remarks "unacceptable," emphasizing, "Greenland is not for sale."
