Trump Delays Canada Tariffs Following Trudeau Call

President Donald Trump has agreed to postpone tariffs on Canadian imports for at least 30 days, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on X on February 3.

The announcement came after Trudeau’s second call with Trump that day, according to Reuters.

What’s Behind the Delay?

Canada has pledged to create a special task force to combat fentanyl smuggling and will increase border monitoring, Trudeau stated.

He added that Canada will deploy new technology and personnel along the U.S.-Canada border to curb the flow of fentanyl into the U.S.

The White House has not yet confirmed the agreement, but Trump told reporters the conversation with Trudeau went “very well.”

Trump’s Original Tariff Threat

Earlier, Trump had threatened to impose tariffs on Canadian imports unless Ottawa cracked down on fentanyl smuggling and illegal border crossings.

🔹 “The proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together,” Trudeau wrote.

This follows a similar 30-day suspension Trump granted Mexico after a deal was reached with President Claudia Sheinbaum to bolster border security.

What’s Next?

With Mexico and Canada both securing temporary tariff relief, the focus now shifts to China and the European Union, as Trump continues to pressure global trade partners.
