Trump Demands $500 Billion in Rare Earths from Ukraine in Exchange for Aid

President Donald Trump has stated that the U.S. will continue providing aid to Ukraine—but only if Kyiv hands over $500 billion worth of rare earth minerals to Washington.

“Ukraine has enormous potential in rare earths and energy resources. I want the U.S. to get something in return because we’re spending hundreds of billions of dollars,” Trump said in a February 10 interview with Fox News.

“They can make a deal, or they can choose not to. One day, they might belong to Russia, or they might not. But we’ve given them all this money, and I want something back,” he added.

Trump: Ukraine Agreed "In Principle" to Rare Earth Deal

Trump claimed he had made it clear to Ukrainian leadership that the U.S. must be compensated for its financial support.

“I told them I want the equivalent—maybe $500 billion worth of rare earths. They basically agreed, so at least we don’t feel like fools. I emphasized that we need to get something in return,” he said.

Rare earth minerals are critical components in high-tech manufacturing, including smartphones, electric vehicle batteries, and defense equipment. While the U.S. does have some rare earth mining operations, its production capacity is very limited, making the country heavily dependent on imports.

Since the start of the Ukraine conflict, the U.S. has been Kyiv’s largest supporter, providing an estimated $175 billion in military and economic aid.

Zelensky Pushes for U.S. Investment Instead of Resource Handovers

President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly emphasized Ukraine’s rare earth potential. On February 4, he urged U.S. companies to invest in Ukraine’s mineral sector, calling it a key driver of economic growth.

On February 7, Zelensky rejected the idea of giving away Ukraine’s resources, instead advocating for a mutually beneficial partnership where Ukraine and U.S. firms could jointly develop mining projects.

Trump Sending Envoy to Ukraine for Peace Proposal

Trump also confirmed he would soon send Keith Kellogg as a special envoy to Ukraine to draft a peace proposal to end the conflict.

While Trump is pushing for a quick resolution, Zelensky has insisted that any deal must include ironclad U.S. security guarantees—such as NATO membership or a peacekeeping force—to prevent Russia from regrouping and launching future attacks.

According to Zelensky’s spokesperson, Sergiy Nikiforov, the Ukrainian leader is set to meet U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance on February 14 during the Munich Security Conference. Sources in Zelensky’s office also confirmed that Kellogg will visit Ukraine on February 20, though the exact location has not been disclosed.

Zelensky said on February 10 that a meeting with Trump is being arranged, but no date has been finalized. Last week, Trump suggested he “might” meet with Zelensky soon but ruled out visiting Kyiv in person.
