President Donald Trump has announced the termination of federal security protection for Dr. Anthony Fauci, the 85-year-old epidemiologist who faced death threats over his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.
"You can't be protected for the rest of your life just because you worked for the government," President Trump said on January 24, explaining the decision.
The federal security detail assigned to Dr. Fauci reportedly ended on January 23, forcing him to hire private security to ensure his safety. Dr. Fauci, who played a leading role in the Covid-19 response during Trump’s first term, has been a frequent target of threats from right-wing extremists.
Former President Joe Biden had issued a preventive pardon for Fauci on his last day in office, citing concerns over politically motivated investigations targeting the health expert.
Other Security Withdrawals
Earlier this week, Trump also revoked federal protection for former National Security Advisor John Bolton. When asked whether he felt responsible for any potential harm to Fauci or Bolton, the president replied, "Absolutely not."
"They’ve made plenty of money. They can afford their own security. I can offer them a great pool of private security professionals," Trump said.
Reports indicate that Trump has also rescinded protection for former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his aide Brian Hook.
High-Profile Targets
Bolton, who was reportedly targeted by Iran in a suspected assassination plot, has been one of Trump’s harshest critics following his first term. The U.S. State Department has offered a $20 million reward for information leading to the capture of those involved in the alleged scheme.
Iran is also said to have sought revenge against Trump for authorizing the January 2020 drone strike that killed Qasem Soleimani, the commander of Iran’s Quds Force, near Baghdad. Tehran has denied these allegations.
Fallout and Reaction
The removal of protection for Fauci, a figure polarizing yet respected in the public health sector, has reignited debate about the responsibilities of the federal government to safeguard former officials. Critics argue the move is reckless, while Trump’s supporters claim it is consistent with his stance against "wasteful spending" on government perks.
