Trump May Sell His Tesla Amid Feud With Elon Musk

President Donald Trump is considering selling—or even giving away—his red Tesla Model S in the wake of a highly public spat with Elon Musk, according to White House officials.

“The president is thinking about it, yes,” a senior administration official confirmed on June 6 when asked whether Trump plans to offload the electric vehicle he purchased in March. Another official added that no final decision has been made.

Neither Trump nor Musk has publicly commented on the potential sale. The Tesla Model S, valued at around $80,000, remains parked on White House grounds. Just last week, Trump aides Margo Martin and Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt were photographed inside the vehicle. “Cruising in President Trump’s Tesla,” Martin captioned the images shared on social media.

Trump originally bought the car to show his support for Elon Musk, then a close political ally and head of the White House’s Government Operations Efficiency Group (DOGE). At the time, Trump praised the vehicle as a “remarkable product” and defended Musk and Tesla against what he called “radical left-wing attacks.”

Tesla was under pressure during that period, facing backlash from labor unions and public employees over government spending cuts and layoffs linked to DOGE’s efforts to slim down the federal workforce.

But the Trump-Musk alliance began to unravel after the president pushed for a sweeping $4.5 trillion tax reform bill—legislation Musk strongly opposed. Their disagreement quickly escalated into a heated war of words on social media, with both men taking personal shots at one another.

Following the exchange, Trump told CNN he was “not concerned” about Musk and had no intention of speaking with him “anytime soon.”
