Trump Orders Airstrikes, Threatens to 'Rain Hell' on Houthi Rebels
President Donald Trump announced that he has ordered U.S. airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen, warning that more severe actions will follow if the group does not cease attacks on commercial ships.
"I have ordered the U.S. military to take decisive and strong action against the Houthi in Yemen," Trump wrote on Truth Social on March 15. "They have carried out relentless acts of piracy, violence, and terrorism against ships, aircraft, and drones belonging to the U.S. and other nations."
Trump confirmed that American forces are conducting airstrikes on Houthi bases, leaders, and missile defense systems to protect U.S. and allied maritime and aerial assets and restore freedom of navigation.
According to Houthi-controlled health officials, at least 24 people were killed and 14 others injured in the strikes.
'Your Time Is Up': Trump Issues Stark Warning
Trump accused the previous Biden administration of failing to deter the Houthis and vowed an overwhelming military response.
"Your time is up, and your attacks end today," Trump wrote. "If not, hell will rain down on you like never before."
He also warned Iran to immediately stop supporting the Houthis.
"Do not threaten the American people, their president, or global shipping routes," Trump declared. "If you do, beware—because America will hold you fully accountable. And we will not be nice about it!"
U.S. Strikes Launched from Aircraft Carrier
The U.S. airstrikes on March 15 were carried out in part by fighter jets from the USS Harry S. Truman, stationed in the Red Sea. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) described the operation as the beginning of a large-scale military campaign across Yemen.
A senior U.S. defense official stated that further actions would depend on an assessment of the strike's impact, but Washington is likely to intensify military operations against the Houthis in the coming weeks.
Yemeni residents in Sanaa reported that a Houthi stronghold was hit. "The explosions shook our entire neighborhood. Women and children were terrified," said Abdullah Yahia, a local witness.
Another airstrike on an electricity plant in Dahyan, Saada, led to a widespread power outage. Dahyan is a key stronghold where Abdul Malik al-Houthi, the group's elusive leader, often meets his inner circle.
Houthi Rebels Vow Retaliation
The Houthi political office condemned the U.S. strikes, vowing "full retaliation".
"We are fully prepared to escalate in response to this aggression," the group stated in a televised address.
The Houthis have attacked over 100 ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since November 2023, claiming they are targeting vessels linked to Israel in solidarity with Hamas.
Their campaign has disrupted global shipping, forcing many companies to reroute around Africa, increasing costs and delays.
The U.S. previously launched targeted strikes against Houthi positions under the Biden administration, but failed to deter their attacks.
The Houthis declared a pause in their Red Sea campaign in January, following a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas. However, on March 11, they announced that Israeli ships violating the blockade would be attacked, citing Tel Aviv’s failure to meet their ultimatum.
Earlier this month, the U.S. officially re-designated the Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO), banning any financial or material support for the group.
