Trump Replaces National Security Advisor, Nominates Mike Waltz for U.N. Ambassador
President Donald Trump has announced a major shake-up in his national security team, appointing Secretary of State Marco Rubio as acting National Security Advisor and nominating Rep. Mike Waltz to serve as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.
"I’m proud to announce my intent to nominate Mike Waltz as the next U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations," President Trump said in a statement on May 1. "From his time in uniform to the battlefield, to Congress and the National Security Council, Mike has always put America first. I’m confident he’ll continue to do so in this important role."
The position of U.N. Ambassador requires Senate confirmation. Trump had previously tapped Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York for the post but withdrew her nomination in late March. “Together, we’ll keep fighting tirelessly to make America—and the world—safe again. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump added.
Waltz, a former Green Beret and key voice in Trump’s foreign policy circle, said he was “deeply honored” to continue serving the president and the country.
In a surprise move, Trump also announced that Secretary of State Marco Rubio would assume the role of acting National Security Advisor while a permanent replacement is finalized. This makes Rubio the first person to hold both positions simultaneously since the 1970s.
“When there’s a problem, I call Marco. He gets it done,” Trump said during a White House press briefing.
Reports suggest that Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy for the Middle East, is the likely long-term pick for National Security Advisor. This marks the first major personnel shift of Trump’s second term and comes in the wake of a recent security breach involving a leaked group chat among White House officials discussing military operations in Yemen.
The breach, reportedly caused by a journalist being accidentally added to a Signal chat, sparked controversy in March. Waltz took responsibility, and Trump publicly defended him amid the backlash.
Sources also indicate that Trump has quietly replaced Deputy National Security Advisor Alex Wong, a key Asia policy expert during Trump’s first term, though the White House has not confirmed the change.
During his first administration, Trump went through four national security advisors: Michael Flynn, H.R. McMaster, John Bolton, and Robert O’Brien.
