Trump Says He Was ‘Joking’ About Ending Ukraine War in 24 Hours

President Donald Trump clarified his campaign promise to end the Russia-Ukraine war within 24 hours, saying he was "just joking" about the timeline.

In an interview with Full Measure on March 15, President Trump was asked about his repeated pledge during the campaign to quickly end the conflict—a promise that has yet to materialize after 55 days in office.

"Well, I was just joking when I said that," Trump responded. "What I meant was that I really want to resolve it quickly, and I think I’ll be successful."

During a CNN town hall in May 2023, Trump declared he would immediately bring the war to a halt if re-elected. "Russians and Ukrainians are dying. I want them to stop. I’ll make it happen in 24 hours," he said at the time.

He repeated the claim in a September 2024 debate with then-Vice President Kamala Harris, stating: "This is a war that needs to end fast. I will handle it quickly before I even take office."

Throughout his campaign, Trump frequently touted his ability to negotiate peace between Moscow and Kyiv. However, his efforts to broker a deal since taking office have yet to yield a concrete peace agreement.

U.S.-Led Ceasefire Talks Progress, But No Deal Yet

Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy, traveled to Moscow this week for negotiations on a 30-day ceasefire proposal initiated by Washington, which Ukraine has already accepted.

Following the visit, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed support for the temporary ceasefire, but stressed that "any agreement must lead to lasting peace and address the root causes of the conflict."

When asked what the U.S. would do if Putin rejected the ceasefire plan, Trump replied:

"That would be bad news for the world because too many people are dying."

However, Trump said he remains optimistic, adding: "I think he’ll agree. I really do. I believe I understand him well enough to say that he will."
