Trump Says U.S. Economy Will Be Fine in the Long Run Despite Recession Fears
President Donald Trump sought to calm growing concerns about a possible economic downturn, insisting the U.S. economy remains strong in the long term—even if it faces a short-term recession.
Speaking on NBC News' Meet the Press on May 2, Trump was asked whether the country could weather a temporary recession. “Everything’s going to be fine,” he said. “As I’ve said before, this is a period of transition. I think we’re going to be incredible.”
Pressed by host Kristen Welker about whether he was worried about a recession, Trump responded bluntly: “No.” He didn’t rule out the possibility, adding, “Anything can happen, but I think we’re going to have the greatest economy in the history of our country.”
His comments come amid heightened Wall Street anxiety over rising tariffs and trade uncertainty. Some economists have warned that the administration’s rapidly shifting trade policies could tip the U.S. into a recession.
“You’re talking about some people on Wall Street, but there are a lot of others who say we’re about to see the biggest upside surprise ever,” Trump countered during the interview, which was conducted at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. “Why don’t you ever mention them?”
The U.S. Commerce Department reported on April 30 that GDP contracted by 0.3% in the first quarter of 2025—driven largely by falling exports and a surge in imports ahead of new tariffs set to take effect. During a cabinet meeting the same day, Trump dismissed concerns about the downturn, blaming it on the “mess” left behind by former President Joe Biden.
Earlier this month, Trump unveiled sweeping new tariffs on roughly 180 trade partners. In addition to a standard 10% rate, he announced steeper retaliatory tariffs on about 60 of America’s largest trading partners, effective April 9.
However, just hours after those tariffs took effect, Trump reversed course and granted a 90-day delay for many countries—except China—following a sharp stock market drop and a major sell-off in U.S. bonds that rattled investors.
Despite criticism, Trump has repeatedly defended the policy, including the current 145% tariff on Chinese goods, claiming it will pay off in the long term and help “Make America Great Again.”
