President Donald Trump has appointed Alice Marie Johnson, who spent 22 years in prison before receiving clemency during his first term, to advise on future pardons.
"Alice served time for something that today might not even be prosecuted," Trump said at a Black History Month event at the White House on February 20.
The president recalled granting clemency to Johnson during his first term, calling it "one of the greatest pardons" he had ever issued.
"She is an inspiration to many. We will listen to her recommendations on pardons," Trump said. "She will be my Pardon Czar."
With this announcement, Johnson now has an official role in vetting pardon requests, a task she had informally handled near the end of Trump's first term.
A Story of Clemency and Redemption
Johnson was sentenced to life in prison plus 25 years in 1996 for drug possession and money laundering—her first offense and a non-violent crime.
Her case became a symbol of harsh sentencing laws, particularly those affecting women and minorities. It gained national attention after a viral video of her speaking from prison caught the interest of Kim Kardashian, who personally lobbied Trump for her release.
In May 2018, Kardashian met with Trump to discuss Johnson’s case. Just a week later, Trump commuted her sentence, allowing Johnson to walk free at age 63 after more than two decades behind bars.
Two years later, during his 2020 reelection campaign, Trump granted her a full pardon, wiping her criminal record clean—despite pushback from some members of his administration and Republican allies.
From Prison to Political Ally
Since her release, Johnson has become one of Trump’s most vocal supporters. She even appeared in a Super Bowl campaign ad in 2020, aimed at attracting Black voters.
Some of Trump’s advisers believe Johnson has helped his political standing, particularly with minority communities.
Controversial Pardons Under Trump
Since returning to the White House, Trump has issued several high-profile pardons, including:
-
Most individuals convicted for their roles in the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot
-
Former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, who was imprisoned for corruption
Trump’s decision to appoint Johnson underscores his continued focus on criminal justice reform, an issue that gained traction during his first term.
