Trump Threatens New Strikes if Iran Resumes High-Level Uranium Enrichment

President Donald Trump warned on Thursday that the United States would strike Iran again if intelligence confirms Tehran has resumed enriching uranium to dangerous levels.

“Absolutely. No question about it,” Trump said during a press conference on June 27, when asked whether he would authorize another round of airstrikes if Iran continued its nuclear activities at a concerning pace.

He then launched into a sharp critique of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

“I know exactly where he’s hiding, and I chose not to let Israel or the U.S. military—the strongest and most powerful in the world—take him out,” Trump posted on social media. “I spared him from a humiliating and messy death. And yet, he didn’t even say ‘Thank you, President Trump.’”

Trump added that he had recently considered lifting some of the economic sanctions on Iran, one of Tehran’s key demands in past negotiations. “Instead, I received nothing but angry, hateful messages,” he said. “So I immediately stopped considering any sanctions relief or further concessions.”

The U.S. president called on Iran to return to the negotiating table. But Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi quickly pushed back, calling Trump’s remarks “disrespectful and unacceptable.”

“If he truly wants a deal, President Trump should change his tone and stop insulting Iran’s Supreme Leader, who is supported by millions of Iranians,” Araghchi said.

In a televised speech on June 26, Ayatollah Khamenei declared that Iran had emerged victorious from its 12-day conflict with Israel and vowed not to bow to American pressure. “President Trump has grotesquely exaggerated the facts,” Khamenei said, referring to Trump’s claims that U.S. strikes had completely dismantled Iran’s nuclear program.

Iranian officials also denied reports that nuclear talks with the U.S. would resume in the coming week, despite Trump's earlier suggestion that negotiations were back on. Tehran has repeatedly insisted its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only and not aimed at developing nuclear weapons, contrary to accusations from Washington and its allies.

The latest round of conflict erupted on June 13 when Israel launched a surprise operation dubbed “Rising Lion,” killing several senior Iranian commanders and nuclear scientists. Iran responded with “True Promise 3,” triggering days of heavy exchanges that left more than 606 Iranians and 28 Israelis dead, along with thousands wounded on both sides.

In the early hours of June 22, the United States intervened, deploying bombers to strike three key Iranian nuclear facilities before urging Tehran to enter negotiations. President Trump announced the next day that both Iran and Israel had agreed to a full ceasefire, with each side claiming victory.

On June 26, Foreign Minister Araghchi acknowledged that Iran’s nuclear infrastructure had suffered “serious damage” during the conflict and said assessments were still underway.
