Trump Threatens Sweeping Sanctions on Russia

President Donald Trump announced that he is considering imposing large-scale tariffs and sanctions on Russia “until a ceasefire is reached” in Ukraine.

"Given that Russia is carrying out intense attacks against Ukraine on the battlefield, I am seriously considering imposing major sanctions on the banking sector, embargoes, and tariffs on Russia until a ceasefire and a final peace deal are reached," Trump wrote on Truth Social on March 7.

"To Russia and Ukraine: Get to the negotiating table immediately before it’s too late," he added.

Moscow has not yet responded to the statement. Trump’s remarks came shortly after Russia launched a large-scale overnight attack on Ukrainian territory.

According to Ukraine’s Air Force, Russia fired 194 suicide drones and decoys, along with 58 missiles of various types, primarily targeting Ukraine’s gas infrastructure. Ukrainian air defenses claimed to have shot down 34 missiles and 100 suicide drones, while 86 decoy drones veered off course and 10 missiles missed their targets. However, Ukrainian officials did not disclose how many missiles and drones got through.

Russia’s Defense Ministry later stated that all intended targets—energy infrastructure linked to Ukraine’s defense industry—were successfully hit. DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private energy company, confirmed that it had suspended gas extraction operations in Poltava province due to extensive damage from the attack.

Trump’s threat of new sanctions is seen as an unexpected move, as U.S.-Russia relations had been warming in recent weeks.

On February 24, both the U.S. and Russia voted in favor of United Nations resolutions calling for an end to the conflict in Ukraine—without emphasizing Kyiv’s territorial integrity. The resolutions were opposed by Washington’s European allies.

Last month, Trump held a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, marking his first direct diplomatic effort to normalize relations and explore the possibility of lifting sanctions imposed on Moscow by the previous administration.

Trump has faced intense criticism from both allies and political opponents in the U.S., who accuse him of being too accommodating toward Russia.

Meanwhile, U.S.-Ukraine relations have deteriorated significantly. On February 28, Trump and Vice President JD Vance had a heated confrontation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House, accusing him of being "ungrateful" despite Washington’s multibillion-dollar military aid to Kyiv.

Earlier this month, Trump’s administration suspended military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine, stating that support would only resume if Zelensky made a clear commitment toward peace negotiations.
