Trump Threatens to Reclaim Control of Panama Canal

The U.S. President-elect has criticized Panama for charging excessive fees for the canal's use and warned that he may demand the country hand back control.

"The U.S. Navy and our commercial vessels have been treated unfairly. The fees Panama is imposing are ridiculous, especially considering the generosity the U.S. has extended to them," President-elect Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social on December 21.

The U.S. constructed the Panama Canal and managed the surrounding territory for decades. The American government handed over full control of the canal to Panama in 1999 after a period of joint management.

"The canal was returned not for the benefit of others but purely as a symbol of cooperation between the U.S. and Panama. If the ethical and legal principles of this generous act are not upheld, we will demand the full return of the Panama Canal to the United States, without question," Trump stated.

Trump's post marks a rare instance of a U.S. leader suggesting the possibility of forcing a sovereign nation to surrender its territory. It also highlights a shift in U.S. foreign policy under Trump’s second term, as he has repeatedly applied pressure on allies and partners.

The Panama Canal, stretching 82 km, serves as a crucial shortcut connecting the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, significantly reducing travel distances and eliminating the need for ships to navigate the long and dangerous route around South America's southern tip.

Approximately 5% of global maritime traffic passes through the Panama Canal annually. The United States, China, Japan, and South Korea are the primary users of this strategic waterway. In October, the Panama Canal Authority announced record revenues of nearly $5 billion for the 2024 fiscal year.
