Trump: Canada Can Join U.S. Missile Shield for Free—If It Becomes the 51st State
President Donald Trump made headlines again on May 27 by offering Canada two options: pay $61 billion to join America’s new "Golden Dome" missile defense system—or become the 51st U.S. state and get it for free.
“Canada really wants to be part of our incredible Golden Dome system,” Trump said. “I told them the cost is $61 billion if they want to stay a separate country and not be on equal footing. But the price drops to zero if they choose to become our beloved 51st state. They’re considering the offer.”
The Canadian government has not issued a response.
Trump’s comments came on the same day King Charles III—Canada’s head of state—delivered a historic speech at the country’s Parliament in Ottawa, the first by a reigning British monarch in nearly 50 years. The King praised Canada as “a strong and free country” and applauded its commitment to democracy and individual liberty during turbulent times.
Since returning to the White House in January, President Trump has repeatedly floated the idea of Canada joining the U.S. as a state. The suggestion has sparked backlash and added friction to an already tense relationship, especially following Trump’s efforts to tighten border controls and impose steep tariffs on Canadian imports.
Earlier this month, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney visited the White House and diplomatically rejected Trump’s proposal, stating that “Canada is not for sale.”
The “Golden Dome” missile shield, unveiled by Trump last week, is a sweeping initiative designed to defend the U.S. against a range of modern threats, including hypersonic and nuclear weapons. Estimated to cost $175 billion, the system is expected to be operational by 2029—coinciding with the end of Trump’s current term.
Experts have raised concerns about the project’s technological feasibility and political complexity, warning that actual costs could far exceed early estimates.
Despite this, Trump claimed Canada is eager to participate. Prime Minister Carney later confirmed high-level discussions had taken place between the two countries regarding potential cooperation on the Golden Dome program.
In addition to their NATO alliance, the U.S. and Canada already partner on continental defense through the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), a longstanding joint initiative responsible for detecting and responding to air and space threats across North America.
While Canada’s interest in missile defense collaboration appears genuine, the prospect of becoming America’s next state remains, for now, a political flashpoint—and a rhetorical flourish more than a realistic proposal.
