Trump: I’ll Serve Eight Years as President, Then Step Aside
President Donald Trump declared he will not seek a third term and plans to leave office after serving a second full term, offering the clearest signal yet that he intends to abide by the constitutional limit of two presidential terms.
“I’ll be president for eight years. I’ll serve two terms. I’ve always thought that was very important,” Trump said during an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press aired Thursday.
Trump acknowledged he has broad support among allies who would back a third-term bid in 2028 but admitted that such a move would face serious legal obstacles.
“As I understand it, that’s not allowed. I’m not sure whether that’s constitutional or something else,” he said.
The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution clearly states that “no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice,” and also prohibits any individual who has served more than two years of another president’s term from being elected more than once.
Earlier this year, Trump had floated the idea of a third term in March, saying he “wasn’t joking” and suggesting there might be legal pathways to pursue it. Speculation peaked after Trump Organization began selling red hats reading “Trump 2028,” a move critics said signaled deeper ambitions.
“Sure, people are selling 2028 hats, but that’s not what I’m doing,” Trump said. “I want four great years, and then I’ll hand it over—ideally to a strong Republican who can carry on the work.”
Trump hinted that the Republican Party has “maybe 20” strong contenders for 2028 and named Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as “stars” who could lead the MAGA movement forward. Still, he stressed it’s too early to endorse a successor.
Back in February, Trump praised Vance as “very talented” during an interview with Fox News but stopped short of calling him a guaranteed heir. Trump’s confidence in Rubio has been reflected in multiple high-profile assignments: he’s been acting head of the National Archives, USAID, and most recently, national security adviser.
Trump also said his focus now is on the 2026 midterms, where he hopes to help Republicans maintain control of both chambers of Congress. “I’ll be very active, especially when it comes to fundraising,” he added.
The president dismissed concerns that his leadership may be hurting the GOP. “If you look at history, the party that wins the presidency usually loses the House or Senate in the next midterm. I think we’re going to break that pattern—easily,” Trump said.
