Donald Trump declared he would protect women “whether they like it or not,” ignoring his advisers’ recommendation to avoid discussing the topic.
Speaking at a campaign rally on October 30 at Resch Center in the battleground state of Wisconsin, the Republican presidential candidate criticized the Biden-Harris administration on immigration, accusing them of “importing migrant criminals” who, he claimed, “attack, assault, and kill American women and children.”
“Anyone who lets these monsters abduct and murder our children has no business being near the Oval Office. I want to protect American women, and I will do it, whether they like it or not,” Trump said.
He added that about four weeks earlier, his advisers had advised him against addressing this issue, believing it would be “inappropriate.” “But I said, ‘No, I want to protect them. I will do it,’” he recounted. “Are there any women here tonight who don’t want to be protected? Anyone who doesn’t want the president to keep them safe?” he asked the cheering crowd.
In response, Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris said on October 31 that Trump’s remarks were “deeply insulting to women,” accusing him of disregarding women’s rights and their ability to make decisions about their own lives and bodies.
“This is yet another example of how the former president views women and their capabilities,” Harris stated.
Later that evening, Trump campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt clarified that his pledge to “protect” included men and children but did not directly address Harris’s criticism.
Trump’s emphasis on protecting women comes as a CBS News poll shows that female voters favor the Democratic candidate. According to the poll, 40% of female voters feel Trump’s campaign focuses too much on men’s concerns, while 56% believe he pays insufficient attention to women’s issues.
Although official campaigning has ended, both Trump and Harris are making final efforts to sway voters in key battleground states, where even a small group of undecided voters could determine the outcome of one of the closest races in history.
Nearly 200 million Americans will cast their votes on November 5 to elect the nation’s 47th president, with over 47 million having already voted early—a record high for recent elections.
