President Donald Trump praised Vice President J.D. Vance for his work but said it’s too early to consider him his successor for 2028.
In a February 10 interview with Fox News, Trump was asked if he viewed Vance as the Republican Party’s leading candidate for the 2028 presidential race.
“No, but he’s very capable,” Trump responded. “I think a lot of people are very capable. So far, Vance is doing a terrific job. But it’s still early—we’re just getting started.”
When the interviewer suggested that by the 2026 midterms, Vance might seek Trump’s endorsement, the president shifted the conversation to praise his vice president’s current role.
"Many people are saying this is the best start to any presidency in history—even though it’s only been three weeks," Trump said.
Vance: Rising Star in MAGA Movement
Vice President Vance has quickly become a key figure in connecting Trump’s administration with the Senate and is seen as a potential future leader of the MAGA movement within the Republican Party.
This week, Vance is traveling to Europe for a Paris AI summit and the Munich Security Conference in Germany. He has also been tasked with overseeing the TikTok negotiations and coordinating disaster recovery efforts in the U.S.
Trump is the second president in U.S. history to serve non-consecutive terms. The U.S. Constitution limits presidents to two terms in office.
Proposal to Extend Trump’s Presidency Faces Hurdles
In January, Republican Rep. Andy Ogles introduced a constitutional amendment that would allow Trump to seek a third term, arguing that the U.S. needed “bold leadership” to continue.
However, legal experts note that amending the Constitution requires overwhelming support—either two-thirds of Congress or two-thirds of U.S. states backing a constitutional convention. Given America’s deep political divisions, observers say the proposal is highly unlikely to pass, even with Republican control of Congress.
