Trump: U.S. to Build New F-55 Fighter Jet, Upgrade F-22 to ‘Super’ Version
Former President Donald Trump announced plans for the United States to develop a new twin-engine fighter jet dubbed the F-55, calling it a next-generation upgrade of the F-35, and to modernize the F-22 Raptor into a “Super” variant.
“We're going to build the twin-engine F-55 if we can get the price right. It’s going to be a massive upgrade over the F-35,” Trump said during a meeting with business leaders in Doha, Qatar.
He also praised the F-22, calling it “the most beautiful fighter jet in the world,” and confirmed that the U.S. would begin developing a modernized F-22 Super, adding that the process would move forward “fairly quickly.”
Trump did not offer further details on either program. His remarks come nearly two months after the U.S. Air Force awarded Boeing a contract to produce the F-47, a sixth-generation fighter expected to replace the F-22.
Notably, the F-55 designation has not previously been mentioned in U.S. defense planning. Experts remain unclear whether either the F-55 program or the F-22 Super upgrade is included in the current Pentagon budget.
Nick Cunningham, an aerospace analyst at Agency Partners, speculated that the F-55 could be part of the F/A-XX program, aimed at replacing the Navy’s F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. However, he also cautioned that upgrading the F-22 could be extremely costly, especially since its production line was shut down years ago.
“The fact that the F-55 is designed with twin engines suggests it would be quite different from the F-35, which is powered by a single engine,” Cunningham said.
Meanwhile, Lockheed Martin—the manufacturer of the F-35—is working to enhance the aircraft's combat capabilities through software upgrades. CEO James Taiclet recently stated that Lockheed is exploring ways to integrate technologies developed for the F-47 into the F-35, aiming to deliver 80% of the F-47’s performance at half the cost.
