President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will take control of Gaza, suggesting military deployment to stabilize the region and stating that Palestinians "have no long-term future" there.
Trump Proposes U.S. Occupation of Gaza
"The U.S. will take over Gaza and transform it. We will own the land, clear unexploded ordnance, level everything, and remove the destroyed buildings," Trump said during a February 4 press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Trump did not rule out deploying U.S. forces to fill the security vacuum in Gaza, stating:
"We will do whatever is necessary regarding Gaza. We will take over the area we will develop."
He claimed to have studied the situation for months and said U.S. control would bring stability to Gaza and potentially the entire Middle East.
"This was not an easy decision. Everyone I’ve spoken to loves the idea of the U.S. owning Gaza and developing it—creating thousands of jobs," Trump added.
Calls for Palestinian Relocation
-
Trump proposed relocating Gaza’s population to areas provided by Middle Eastern countries:
"I don’t think they have a choice. What do they have? Just a giant pile of rubble."
-
He framed Palestinian displacement as a humanitarian issue, arguing that no one should want to stay in a war-torn region:
"Why would they want to go back? That place has been hell for them."
-
When a journalist asked why Palestinians might want to return, Trump dismissed the question before replying:
"I don’t see any future for them in Gaza. Gaza is not the place for them to live."
Middle Eastern and Global Opposition
Trump has previously suggested "clearing out Gaza" and resettling Palestinians in Egypt and Jordan as a step toward Middle East peace.
However, this idea has been strongly rejected by:
- Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar
- The Palestinian Authority and the Arab League
Arab leaders have warned that mass displacement would destabilize the region, escalate conflicts, and undermine hopes for peaceful coexistence.
Background on the Gaza Conflict
- Gaza is a 365-square-kilometer strip of land bordering Israel and Egypt, home to 2.4 million people before the war.
- Following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack, Israel launched a military campaign, leaving most of Gaza in ruins and on the brink of humanitarian collapse.
- A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took effect on January 19, 2024, but destruction remains severe.
- Gaza’s Health Ministry reports:
- 47,500 dead
- 111,500 injured
- Many bodies still buried under rubble
Trump's remarks mark a major shift in U.S. foreign policy and could spark international backlash, as they suggest direct American control over a disputed and war-torn territory.
