U.S. Approves Nearly $5.6 Billion Sale of F-16 Fighter Jets to Philippines
The U.S. State Department has approved a potential $5.58 billion arms deal to supply the Philippines with 20 F-16 fighter jets and related equipment, the Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on April 1.
The proposed package includes 16 F-16C Block 70/72 single-seat fighters and 4 F-16D Block 70/72 two-seat trainers, along with radar systems, weapons, training, spare parts, and support equipment.
“This proposed sale will support U.S. foreign policy and national security by helping improve the security of a key strategic partner that continues to be an important force for political stability, peace, and economic progress in Southeast Asia,” the DSCA said in a statement.
The deal is intended to enhance the Philippine Air Force’s air and maritime surveillance capabilities. The U.S. Congress has 30 days to review the sale and block it if desired. If no objections are raised, the deal will move forward and be submitted to President Donald Trump for final approval.
Approval from the State Department does not mean the deal is finalized, nor does it confirm that all terms have been agreed upon. The U.S. often pre-approves arms sales before contract negotiations are complete, and the final purchase may differ in scale or cost.
This isn’t the first time such a deal has been proposed. In June 2021, the U.S. approved a potential $2.43 billion sale of 12 F-16s and missiles to the Philippines, but that agreement never materialized.
During a recent visit to Manila, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reaffirmed America's commitment to "restoring deterrence" in the Indo-Pacific. Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed the pledge to strengthen defense ties with the Philippines.
The F-16, developed by General Dynamics in the 1970s, is a versatile multirole jet used by the U.S. and many of its allies. Depending on the configuration, each aircraft costs between $30 million and $35 million, though prices vary by customer and quantity ordered.
The Block 70/72 is the most advanced version of the F-16, featuring the APG-83 AESA radar and the Viper Shield electronic warfare suite, designed to improve survivability and effectiveness in modern combat environments.
