The Trump administration has approved a $7.4 billion weapons deal for Israel, including bombs, missiles, and military equipment, reinforcing the close alliance between Washington and Tel Aviv.
Breakdown of the Arms Package
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on February 7 that the U.S. State Department approved:
- A $6.75 billion deal for 166 small-diameter bombs, 2,800 250-kg bombs, thousands of guidance kits, fuzes, and other bomb components. Deliveries will begin this year.
- A $660 million deal for 3,000 Hellfire missiles, with deliveries starting in 2028.
The Hellfire missile is a laser-guided, air-to-ground weapon with an 8–9 kg warhead, commonly used on drones and helicopters.
Strategic Importance of the Deal
The DSCA stated that the weapons sale will help Israel "enhance its ability to counter current and future threats."
- The bombs and related equipment will "strengthen Israel's defense capabilities and deter regional threats."
- The Hellfire missiles will "boost the Israeli Air Force's ability to protect borders, critical infrastructure, and civilian centers."
The deal still requires Congressional approval before President Donald Trump can sign it into law.
Political Controversy in Congress
Democratic Representative Gregory Meeks, a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, criticized the move, arguing that the Trump administration bypassed Congress's traditional review process for large arms sales.
Normally, congressional committees review such deals before the administration formally notifies Congress. Meeks accused the administration of failing to provide essential documentation and reasons for the approval.
Despite opposition, Congress—controlled by the Republican Party—is expected to approve the arms sale, given Israel’s longstanding strategic alliance with the U.S.
Weapons Supply and the Gaza Conflict
Following Hamas’s October 2023 attack on Israel, Tel Aviv launched a large-scale military campaign in Gaza, leading to tens of thousands of casualties and widespread infrastructure destruction.
Amid concerns over civilian casualties, the Biden administration had paused the transfer of large explosive bombs to Israel. However, President Trump has reportedly resumed those shipments since taking office.
