U.S. Deploys Second Aircraft Carrier to Middle East Amid Houthi Threat

The Pentagon has ordered the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson to join the USS Harry S. Truman in the Middle East, signaling a heightened U.S. military posture in response to continued attacks by Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels.

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell confirmed the deployment on April 1, stating the move is meant to “promote regional stability, deter aggression, and protect the free flow of commerce.”

The Carl Vinson was previously operating in the Indo-Pacific region. The Pentagon also announced that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has authorized additional fighter jets and air assets to bolster U.S. Central Command’s (CENTCOM) air defense capabilities.

“The United States and its partners remain committed to regional security and stand ready to respond to any actor—state or non-state—that seeks to escalate or expand the conflict,” Parnell said.

The deployment comes amid ongoing Houthi attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, which began after the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war last October. The Houthis claim the attacks are in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. Their operations have disrupted traffic through the Suez Canal, forcing global shipping companies to reroute vessels around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope—adding significant time and cost to trade routes.

On March 15, the U.S. launched a sustained air campaign against Houthi targets in Yemen, vowing to continue strikes until the group halts its attacks on international shipping. Since then, Houthi-controlled regions have been bombarded nearly daily.

One day before the new carrier deployment was announced, President Donald Trump reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to the air campaign, issuing a stark warning to the Houthis and their backer, Iran.

“Houthi’s choice is clear: stop attacking American ships, and we’ll stop hitting you. If not, this is just the beginning—and the real pain hasn’t even started yet, for both the Houthis and their sponsor, Iran,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
