U.S. authorities have located the wreckage of a missing aircraft and confirmed all 10 people on board were killed, after the plane disappeared in Alaska earlier this week.
Plane Found in Icy Waters Near Nome
The U.S. Coast Guard announced on February 7 that they had found the remains of a plane matching the description of the Bering Air aircraft, which vanished during a flight from Unalakleet to Nome in Alaska. The wreckage was located in frozen waters approximately 55 kilometers (34 miles) southeast of Nome.
"We extend our deepest condolences to those affected by this tragedy," the Coast Guard said in a statement on social media.
No Distress Signal Before Crash
Coast Guard spokesman Mike Salerno stated that a search helicopter discovered the wreckage while scanning the area where the aircraft last transmitted a signal. The crew then deployed two rescue personnel to confirm the crash site.
Coast Guard official Benjamin McIntyre-Coble said the aircraft did not send any distress signals before crashing. He explained that the plane was equipped with an emergency locator transmitter, which is designed to send distress signals when an aircraft hits water. However, since the plane crashed onto ice, the device was not activated.
Third Major U.S. Plane Crash in Eight Days
The Bering Air flight had one pilot and nine passengers on board at the time of its disappearance.
This marks the third major aviation disaster in the U.S. within just eight days:
- January 29: A passenger plane collided with a U.S. military helicopter over Washington, D.C., killing 67 people.
- January 31: An air ambulance crashed in Philadelphia, resulting in six deaths on board and one fatality on the ground.
