The United States held a state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter in Washington, D.C., before his burial in his hometown of Plains, Georgia.
The state funeral took place at the Washington National Cathedral at 10 a.m. on January 8 (10 p.m. Hanoi time). President Carter’s casket lay in state at the U.S. Capitol starting the afternoon of January 7, allowing the public to pay their respects.
The ceremony was attended by President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, President-elect Donald Trump and former First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance. Former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton also attended the event.
President Biden delivered a eulogy during the ceremony. In an earlier interview with USA Today, Biden revealed that Carter had personally asked him to deliver the eulogy during their last meeting four years ago. After the state funeral, Carter’s casket was transported to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland and then flown to his hometown of Plains, Georgia.
A smaller ceremony was scheduled for the evening in Plains, followed by Carter’s burial beside his late wife, Rosalynn Carter, who passed away in 2023.
Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, died on December 29, 2024, at his home at the age of 100. In recent years, he faced health challenges, including metastatic melanoma that spread to his liver and brain. President Biden ordered flags at all federal buildings to be flown at half-staff for 30 days in Carter’s honor.
Carter’s presidency is remembered for achievements such as the Camp David Accords, but it was also marked by challenges, including a struggling economy, low public approval, and the Iran hostage crisis, which consumed the final 444 days of his term. After leaving office, Carter dedicated decades to humanitarian work, founding the Carter Center in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1982 to promote global peace and health initiatives.
In 2002, Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his "decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development."
