U.S. Military Identifies Black Hawk Pilot Initially Kept Confidential

The U.S. Army has released the name of the third pilot killed in the January 29 collision between a Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines jet near Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C., which left 67 people dead.

The pilot has been identified as Captain Rebecca Lobach, a Durham, North Carolina native who had served as an aviation officer in the U.S. Army since 2019. She was assigned to the 12th Aviation Battalion at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.

A Name Initially Withheld

Initially, the military refused to disclose Lobach’s identity, citing a request from her family—an unusual decision in cases involving military casualties. However, on February 1, the Army announced that Lobach’s family had agreed to release her name.

"Lobach was a shining light in all of our lives," her family said in a statement.

They also revealed that she was a strong advocate for sexual assault survivors and had plans to pursue a medical career after completing her military service.

"No one dreamed bigger or worked harder to achieve their goals than Lobach," the statement read.

Other Identified Soldiers and Ongoing Recovery Efforts

Earlier, the military confirmed the identities of the other two crew members who died in the crash:

  • Sergeant Ryan Austin O’Hara, 28
  • Warrant Officer 2 Andrew Loyd Eaves, 39

Meanwhile, the names of the 60 passengers and four crew members aboard the American Airlines jet have not yet been officially released, though many have been identified through family members and social media.

Recovery Operations Underway

Authorities are preparing to remove the wreckage from the Potomac River starting February 2.

The Washington, D.C. Fire Department reported on February 1 that they have recovered 42 bodies from the crash site.
