U.S. National Security Adviser Mike Waltz has urged Ukraine to ease its criticism of Washington and quickly sign a mineral deal proposed by President Donald Trump.
In an interview with Fox News, Waltz said Ukraine’s opposition to the mineral agreement and Trump’s peace negotiations with Russia was “unacceptable”, especially given America’s extensive support for Kyiv.
“They need to tone it down, take a hard look, and sign that agreement,” Waltz said, emphasizing that U.S.-Ukraine disagreements are not irreconcilable.
“President Trump has made it clear how much he cares about the Ukrainian people,” he added.
Waltz Defends U.S. Negotiations with Russia
Waltz also rejected claims that Ukraine and its allies were excluded from peace talks with Russia.
“There’s a term for this—it’s called ‘shuttle diplomacy,’” Waltz explained. “Sitting everyone at the table at once, as we did in the past, is no longer effective. Instead, we engage one side, then the other, and progress is made under President Trump’s direction.”
His remarks came one day after Trump and Zelensky exchanged verbal attacks, with Trump calling Zelensky a ‘dictator’ and Zelensky accusing Trump of being misled by Russian propaganda.
Trump’s Push for a Rare Earth Minerals Deal
Trump has recently emphasized a potential rare earth minerals deal, in which the U.S. would provide financial aid to Ukraine in exchange for access to rare earth resources worth $500 billion.
Last week, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent visited Kyiv to discuss mineral and energy agreements with Ukrainian officials.
Meanwhile, Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin, announcing a path toward a peace solution for Ukraine.
On February 18, U.S. and Russian delegations met in Saudi Arabia to discuss ending the conflict and expanding economic cooperation.
However, Zelensky and European leaders have strongly opposed Trump’s decision to exclude them from ceasefire talks.
U.S. Special Envoy Meets with Ukrainian Officials
Keith Kellogg, U.S. Special Envoy for Ukraine, arrived in Kyiv on February 19 to “listen to Ukraine’s concerns” following the diplomatic fallout.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha confirmed he had met with Kellogg to discuss ways Kyiv could achieve a lasting peace with Moscow.
As Trump’s Ukraine strategy unfolds, pressure is mounting on Kyiv to navigate the shifting dynamics between Washington, Moscow, and European allies.
