U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Devin Nunes, the CEO of Truth Social, a social media platform owned by Trump, as the chairman of the White House's Presidential Intelligence Advisory Board (PIAB).
"I am thrilled to announce the appointment of Truth Social CEO Devin Nunes as the chairman of the Presidential Intelligence Advisory Board. This board will comprise talented private citizens who do not work for the federal government," Trump announced on social media on December 14.
The PIAB, established in the mid-20th century, serves as an independent advisory body that evaluates the effectiveness of U.S. intelligence agencies and their data collection methods.
Trump stated that Nunes will continue to serve as the CEO of Truth Social, operated by the Trump Media & Technology Group, while taking on his new role. "Devin will draw on his experience as a former chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and his critical role in exposing the Russian hoaxes to provide me with independent assessments of the effectiveness and propriety of the U.S. intelligence community’s activities," Trump added, referring to investigations into alleged Russian interference during his first term.
Nunes, 51, is a former Republican congressman from California who chaired the House Intelligence Committee during the early part of Trump’s first term.
In 2018, while serving as chairman, Nunes released a controversial memo alleging that the FBI colluded against Trump by conducting investigations into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. He also accused the FBI of abusing its authority to surveil a Trump campaign official suspected of having ties to Russia.
Nunes’ appointment to the intelligence advisory board follows Trump’s nomination of loyal ally Kash Patel to replace Christopher Wray as FBI Director.
Patel, a former Pentagon advisor and official, is known for his belief in the existence of a "deep state" within the U.S. government. Nunes credited Patel with helping draft the 2018 memo criticizing the FBI.
Outgoing FBI Director Wray announced on December 11 that he would step down before Trump’s inauguration on January 20.
