U.S. Senator Proposes Sanctions on Russia If Moscow Rejects Ceasefire

U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham has endorsed the proposed 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine and called for tough sanctions on Russia if Moscow refuses to comply.

"I hope Russia will follow through. If they reject it, we should impose severe sanctions on them," Graham said on March 11, referring to Ukraine’s acceptance of the temporary ceasefire.

The senator also praised President Donald Trump’s team for helping broker the ceasefire proposal. "I commend the president’s efforts to end this conflict as soon as possible," Graham added.

U.S.-Ukraine Talks and the Ceasefire Proposal

On March 11, U.S. and Ukrainian delegations met in Saudi Arabia and issued a joint statement confirming that Kyiv is willing to implement a preliminary, continuous ceasefire under Washington’s initiative. The 30-day truce would take effect immediately if Russia agrees and could be extended.

Moscow has not yet responded to the proposal.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington will deliver the plan to Russia through multiple diplomatic channels. Meanwhile, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz is set to meet his Russian counterpart in the coming days, and U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff is scheduled to visit Moscow this week for direct talks with President Vladimir Putin.

President Trump also indicated that he may speak with Putin later this week.

Graham’s Proposed Sanctions

Graham announced plans to introduce a new sanctions bill in Congress that would target not only Russia but also countries purchasing Russian goods, including oil, gas, and uranium.

"This will force Moscow to feel real economic pain," he said, emphasizing the need to pressure Russia into accepting the ceasefire.
