U.S. Sets Two-Week Deadline to Reassess Russia’s Intentions, Trump Warns
President Donald Trump on May 28 gave Russia a two-week window to demonstrate genuine commitment to peace talks with Ukraine—warning that if Moscow is merely stalling, the U.S. response will shift accordingly.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said American efforts to broker a ceasefire were “still going well,” but he expressed growing doubts about President Vladimir Putin’s sincerity.
“We’re going to find out if he’s just pretending,” Trump said. “If he is, our response will be a little different. But it’ll take about a week and a half to two weeks to determine that. Russia seems to want to do something, but until there’s a signed deal, no one can say for sure.”
The remarks mark another sharp turn in Trump’s tone toward Putin, coming just days after Russian missile strikes killed civilians in Ukraine—strikes that occurred even as diplomatic channels remained open.
“I’m very disappointed with what happened over the past few nights,” Trump said, referencing recent Russian attacks. “People are dying while these so-called negotiations are underway. Missile strikes on cities are completely unacceptable. We’re not going to allow that.”
Balancing Pressure and Peace
Top Republican lawmakers have been pushing Trump to take a tougher stance on Russia, including the imposition of new sanctions to increase economic pressure on the Kremlin. But Trump has so far resisted.
“If I think we’re close to a deal, I’m not going to jeopardize it with sanctions,” he said. “I’m tougher than the people you're talking about—but you have to know when to be tough. I don’t want to damage the peace process. This isn’t Trump’s war—it’s Biden’s, Zelensky’s, and Putin’s.”
Trump’s comments follow a series of public criticisms directed at Putin in recent days. On May 27, he accused the Russian leader of “playing with fire.” In response, the Kremlin suggested that Trump was “poorly informed about the realities of the conflict.”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov later told Russian media that Trump’s statements seemed “overly emotional” but acknowledged the former president’s sincere commitment to restarting peace negotiations. “We value President Trump’s personal efforts in this process,” Peskov added.
While Trump continues to position himself as a potential peace broker, his growing impatience signals a potential turning point in U.S. posture—one that could lead to renewed economic or diplomatic pressure on Russia if talks fail to progress.
