U.S. to Hold Military Parade on Trump’s Birthday

The United States will hold a large-scale military parade on June 14 to mark the 250th anniversary of the founding of the U.S. Army—an event that also happens to coincide with President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday.

“President Donald Trump will honor America’s veterans, active-duty service members, and the historic legacy of the U.S. military with a national parade,” White House spokesperson Anna Kelly announced on social media platform X on May 2.

According to Army spokesperson Heather Hagan, the celebration will include a parade, a fireworks display, and a public festival on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The U.S. Army traces its roots back to June 14, 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized the formation of the Continental Army, comprising companies from Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. George Washington was named commander in chief.

Typically, the military branches celebrate their founding with smaller commemorations nationwide and on overseas bases. This year’s milestone anniversary, however, has prompted broader plans. An unnamed official confirmed that the date falling on Trump’s birthday played a role in elevating the event to a full-scale parade.

“With the Army’s 250th anniversary approaching, we’re exploring options for a larger celebration—one with a stronger show of force, expanded equipment displays, and deeper engagement with the public,” said Hagan. “Planning is underway, and we anticipate 150 vehicles, 50 aircraft, and 6,600 troops participating.”

The final parade plans, however, have not yet received formal approval from the White House or top Pentagon officials.

Trump first floated the idea of a grand military parade in Washington during his first term, inspired by France’s Bastille Day celebration in 2017. But the proposal was shelved after the Pentagon estimated it could cost up to $92 million, and local officials raised concerns about damage to city infrastructure.

Last month, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser echoed similar concerns. “Rolling tanks through our streets is not acceptable. It would cost millions to repair the damage to our roads,” she warned.

Large-scale military parades are rare in the U.S. The last major one in Washington was held in 1991 to celebrate victory in the Gulf War.

News of this year’s planned parade came just a day after Trump announced his intention to designate May 8 as “Victory Day” for World War II and to rename Veterans Day (November 11) as “Victory Day” for World War I. In a post on Truth Social, Trump downplayed Europe’s contributions to the wars and criticized past U.S. leaders for failing to mark the victories.

“We won both World Wars. No one matched our strength, bravery, or military genius,” Trump wrote. “But we never celebrated anything—because we lost the will and leadership to do so. That changes now.”
