President Joe Biden announced that two future U.S. aircraft carriers will be named in honor of former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.
“The USS William J. Clinton and USS George W. Bush will be constructed in the coming years. Once completed, these warships will join the world’s most capable, flexible, and professional naval force,” Biden stated on December 13. The two carriers will be part of the Gerald R. Ford class, the newest and most advanced aircraft carrier line in the U.S. Navy.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin emphasized that the names of the carriers will serve as lasting tributes to each president’s legacy of service to the nation. “Like their namesakes, these future carriers and their crews will safeguard national security, remind us of our history, and inspire others to serve this great republic,” Austin said.
The U.S. Navy has a tradition of naming aircraft carriers after former presidents. The first ship in the Gerald R. Ford class is named after President Gerald R. Ford, while the second bears the name of John F. Kennedy.
Honoring Two Presidents
William J. "Bill" Clinton, the 42nd president of the United States, served from 1993 to 2001. His tenure included major events such as U.S.-led military actions in Yugoslavia and Iraq, and the infamous 1993 Battle of Mogadishu in Somalia, also known as the "Black Hawk Down" incident.
George W. Bush, the 43rd president and son of former President George H.W. Bush, served from 2001 to 2009. His presidency was defined by the "War on Terror" launched in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, attacks. This era saw prolonged military campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq, resulting in significant casualties and geopolitical shifts.
Next-Generation Warships
The Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carriers represent the pinnacle of naval engineering. Measuring 1,106 feet in length, these carriers can deploy up to 75 aircraft and house over 4,500 personnel. They feature cutting-edge technologies and operational systems designed to increase aircraft launch and recovery rates, reduce manual workloads, and enhance survivability against modern threats.
These carriers will symbolize American naval strength and the enduring legacy of the presidents for whom they are named.
