U.S. Vice President JD Vance has reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to ending the conflict in Ukraine and achieving a lasting peace during his first meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“We want to establish a peace that is durable and sustainable—not one that leads to another conflict in Eastern Europe a few years down the road,” Vance stated on February 14, following his discussion with Zelensky on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Germany.
Vance described their conversation as “productive” and emphasized that both sides would continue discussions in the coming weeks.
Zelensky also characterized the meeting positively, calling it “the first but certainly not the last” with the U.S. vice president. “We are ready to move towards a real and secure peace as quickly as possible,” he posted on social media after the meeting, adding that a special envoy from Washington would soon visit Kyiv.
According to the Ukrainian president’s office, the two delegations discussed several critical issues and agreed to continue working on a bilateral economic cooperation agreement.
Ukraine Seeks Continued U.S. Support Amid Uncertainty
The Munich talks are significant for Ukraine, which is working to maintain U.S. backing at a time of shifting geopolitical dynamics.
Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump raised concerns in Kyiv and among European allies after holding a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which he expressed support for launching peace negotiations on the Ukraine conflict.
The warming of U.S.-Russia relations has fueled fears that Ukraine could be sidelined in future talks. However, Washington has assured that Zelensky will be included in any negotiations.
On February 14, Ukrainian leaders stated they were open to direct dialogue with Putin, but only after Kyiv had aligned its position with Washington and European allies on how to end the war.
U.S. Sends Mixed Signals on Ukraine Strategy
Ahead of his meeting with Zelensky, Vice President Vance stated that the U.S. was prepared to apply pressure on Russia but also emphasized that Europe “must, of course, be part of the negotiations.” He urged European nations to strengthen their defense capabilities so the U.S. could focus on other global security challenges.
However, recent U.S. statements on Ukraine’s future have been contradictory, causing concern among Kyiv’s allies.
On February 12, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that Ukraine’s NATO membership was unlikely and called Kyiv’s goal of restoring its pre-2014 borders—before Russia annexed Crimea—“unrealistic.” He later walked back his remarks, saying that “everything remains on the table” in upcoming negotiations.
These shifting U.S. positions have raised fears in Ukraine and Europe that Kyiv may be pressured into accepting a peace deal that does not fully align with its interests.
