U.S. Vice President Vance Strikes Softer Tone Toward Europe

U.S. Vice President JD Vance signaled a shift in tone on transatlantic relations, emphasizing Europe’s importance as a partner and calling for deeper cooperation, in contrast to his more confrontational remarks earlier this year.

“I still believe the United States and Europe are in the same boat,” Vance said on May 7 during the Munich Leaders Meeting held in Washington, D.C.

While reaffirming that the alliance with Europe remains vital, Vance stressed the need for “serious conversations about the big questions” that shape the relationship. He reiterated the goal set by President Donald Trump for NATO members to spend 5% of their GDP on defense, urging European countries to meet that target.

“We genuinely want to see Europe become more self-reliant in its own defense,” he said. “We see this as the right path forward, and we’re encouraged to see many of our European friends embracing that idea. We all agree on the goal—the question is how quickly we can get there.”

The vice president’s comments marked a notable shift from his speech at the Munich Security Conference in February, where he criticized EU immigration policies and accused Europe of undermining free speech, drawing sharp reactions from European leaders.

On Tuesday, however, Vance acknowledged differences between the U.S. and Europe but urged both sides to work through them. “It’s not about America being right and Europe being wrong. We’ve just drifted apart a bit,” he said. “But we’re ready and willing to get back on track—I hope you are too.”

Vance underscored the deep cultural and historical bonds between the U.S. and Europe, calling them inseparable. “European civilization and American civilization are intertwined. Our cultures are deeply linked,” he said. “The idea that the U.S. and Europe could be separated is, frankly, absurd.”
