UK, France, and Ukraine to Draft Peace Plan
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that the UK, France, and Ukraine will collaborate on a peace plan to end the war in Ukraine, which will then be submitted to U.S. President Donald Trump for evaluation.
"We must find a way to work together. After three years of brutal conflict, it is time to establish a lasting peace. The UK, along with France—and possibly one or two other nations—will work with Ukraine on a plan to end the fighting. Once we have a draft, we will present it to the U.S.," Starmer said on March 2.
The British Prime Minister expressed hope that a “coalition of goodwill” in Europe will stand with Ukraine, emphasizing that any ceasefire agreement must have U.S. backing to prevent Russia from launching another military operation.
"In other words, we need European countries that are willing to take action. The UK and France are leading this effort, which is why President Emmanuel Macron and I are working on this plan," Starmer added.
European Summit Aims to Strengthen Ukraine’s Position
The London Security Summit, hosted by the UK, brings together European leaders to lay the groundwork for Ukraine’s involvement in peace talks, strengthen Kyiv’s negotiating position, and discuss security guarantees needed to sustain long-term peace.
The summit follows the highly publicized dispute between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on February 28. The heated exchange has nearly severed U.S.-Ukraine relations, raising doubts about Washington’s future support for Kyiv.
After leaving Washington without securing a minerals agreement, Zelensky arrived in London on March 1 and will participate in the European-led discussions on peace efforts. European allies have reaffirmed their support for Ukraine, emphasizing their commitment even as Kyiv and Washington struggle to find common ground on ending the war.
Europe Responds to Trump’s Outreach to Russia
The summit comes as the U.S. moves to restore relations with Russia. President Trump recently held a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the war without consulting Ukraine or Europe, raising concerns that Kyiv could be sidelined in a potential peace deal.
Nils Schmid, foreign policy spokesperson for Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD), emphasized the need for Europe to maintain dialogue with President Trump.
"We simply don’t know how the U.S. President’s position on these issues will evolve over the next three months or six months," Schmid said on March 1.
