UK Confirms Joint Airstrikes With U.S. on Houthi Targets in Yemen
The UK Ministry of Defence has confirmed that British fighter jets took part in a joint operation with U.S. forces to strike Houthi military targets in Yemen, marking a coordinated response to ongoing attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
In a statement released April 29, the UK said its forces, acting on intelligence, identified a series of facilities approximately 24 kilometers south of Yemen’s capital, Sanaa. These sites were believed to be drone manufacturing hubs used by the Houthis to launch attacks on commercial vessels.
RAF Typhoon FGR4 jets deployed Paveway IV precision-guided bombs on the targets and returned safely to base, according to the MoD. While the UK did not release a formal battle damage assessment, it emphasized that the strike was carefully planned and executed at night to minimize civilian casualties.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees American military operations in the region, has not yet commented on the British announcement.
Al Masirah TV, a Houthi-affiliated media outlet, responded by accusing the U.S. of “dragging allies into its failing campaign.” The broadcaster claimed that Britain’s participation “will not change the equation,” warning that UK ships would now be considered legitimate targets, similar to U.S. vessels.
The UK previously joined U.S.-led airstrikes on Houthi targets but had refrained from new operations since the U.S. escalated its campaign on March 15. CENTCOM says U.S. forces have struck over 800 targets and killed hundreds of Houthi fighters and commanders in that time.
Despite these strikes, Houthi forces have continued launching drones and ballistic missiles at U.S. warships and Israeli territory, and have downed multiple American MQ-9 Reaper drones. The group began targeting Red Sea shipping in October 2023 in what it describes as support for Palestinians during the war in Gaza.
The attacks have severely disrupted traffic through the Suez Canal, which handles about 12% of global trade, forcing many shipping companies to reroute around the southern tip of Africa — a significantly longer and costlier journey.
