UK Pledges 100,000 Drones to Ukraine, Calling Them a Game-Changer in Modern Warfare

The United Kingdom has pledged to deliver 100,000 drones to Ukraine over the next year, describing the technology as a transformative force on the battlefield.

British Defense Secretary John Healey announced the commitment as part of the UK’s expanded military aid to Kyiv. The new support package includes not only drones but also the completion of a separate delivery of 140,000 artillery shells.

The drone package — valued at £350 million (around $473 million USD) — includes first-person view (FPV) drones and fiber-optic models. It forms part of London’s broader $6 billion military support program for Ukraine.

The latest drone commitment represents a tenfold increase from the UK’s previous goal of providing 10,000 drones in the current fiscal year. In addition, the UK Ministry of Defense will allocate another $335 million to train Ukrainian troops.

The announcement follows a high-profile operation by Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), dubbed “Spider Web,” which reportedly sent 117 drones deep into Russian territory. The coordinated attack struck multiple strategic bases, damaging or destroying 41 military aircraft, including several bombers.

On the same day, the British government approved recommendations from its Independent Strategic Defence Review, which calls for modernizing the armed forces to better confront emerging threats. The review cites the war in Ukraine as a key case study, highlighting the growing importance of drones and electronic warfare capabilities.

The UK Ministry of Defense emphasized that drones have “fundamentally changed how wars are fought” and confirmed plans to invest $5.4 billion into the development of advanced unmanned systems and drone technologies for its own military.

London has also committed to raising defense spending to 2.5% of GDP by April 2027.

“We’re learning every day from the front lines in Ukraine,” said Defense Secretary Healey. “British companies are using that experience to build the next generation of drones — not only to help protect Ukrainian civilians but also to strengthen the UK’s national security.”
