Ukraine Rejects the Possibility of Concessions to Russia

President Zelensky has stated that it would be unacceptable for Europe to make concessions to Russia following Moscow’s suggestion that the West engage in direct negotiations regarding the conflict.

"There have been many discussions suggesting the need to make concessions to President Vladimir Putin, to step back and concede certain points. This is something that is unacceptable for Ukraine and the entirety of Europe," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said while addressing European leaders at a summit in Hungary on November 7.

He added that some European leaders were pushing Ukraine to compromise, though he did not mention specific names. "What we need is enough weapons, not support for negotiations," he emphasized.

In an interview on the sidelines of the event, Zelensky also dismissed a call from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban for a ceasefire on the battlefield, describing it as a "dangerous" and "irresponsible" demand. Orban had previously argued that a ceasefire "could create an opportunity for dialogue and initiate peace negotiations." The Ukrainian leader noted that he had discussed military aid to Kyiv with French President Emmanuel Macron in Budapest.

Zelensky's remarks came after Russia's Security Council chief Sergei Shoigu suggested that Ukraine’s Western allies should enter direct negotiations with Moscow if they wanted to see the conflict end.

"Now that the battlefield situation is unfavorable for Kyiv, the West must make a choice: continue to provide aid and devastate the Ukrainian people, or acknowledge reality and begin negotiating a settlement," Shoigu said.

This was one of the first comments from a Russian official regarding the Ukraine conflict since Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election. Trump has previously stated that he would seek to quickly end the conflict in Ukraine if he returned to the White House.

President Zelensky urged caution regarding Trump’s statements. "I believe that President Trump genuinely wants a quick resolution, but that does not mean everything can happen as he says," Zelensky told reporters in Budapest, warning that a hasty agreement could lead to "losses" for Kyiv.
