Ukraine Says It Has Recaptured Village in Russia-Held Luhansk Region

Ukrainian forces have announced the recapture of the village of Nadiia in Luhansk province—a rare territorial gain for Kyiv in a region almost entirely under Russian control.

On March 23, Ukraine’s 3rd Separate Assault Brigade stated that it had regained control of Nadiia, a village covering about 3 square kilometers, after an offensive led by its 1st Battalion.

According to DeepState, an open-source intelligence group with ties to Ukraine’s Defense Ministry, Russian troops initially captured Nadiia in late February or early March. However, they failed to advance further and were eventually pushed back.

“It took the enemy two months of attacks to seize Nadiia, and they completely lost their 752nd and 254th Motor Rifle Regiments from the 20th Combined Arms Army in the process,” the 3rd Assault Brigade said. The unit did not disclose its own casualties during the operation.

Battalion commander Volodymyr Fokin said regaining Nadiia allows Ukrainian forces to use firepower to strike nearby Russian-held villages and disrupt further enemy advances on neighboring settlements.

A video released by the brigade shows Ukrainian troops pounding Russian positions with heavy artillery, clearing the way for an armored assault involving tanks, BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles, and Western-supplied equipment like M113 APCs and M577 command vehicles converted for troop transport.

Many of the armored vehicles were equipped with electronic warfare systems designed to jam suicide drones. The video also shows several bodies on the ground, believed to be Russian soldiers.

Russia’s Defense Ministry has not commented on the claim.

Nadiia is a small village in Svatove district, Luhansk. Russia first took control of the village in March 2022, shortly after launching its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian forces briefly recaptured it in October 2022, but lost it again earlier this year.

Retaking Nadiia marks a rare advance for Ukrainian forces in Luhansk, a region where Russia reportedly controls about 99% of the territory as of February, according to the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

Luhansk is one of four Ukrainian regions—along with Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia—that Russia claimed to annex in 2022. One of Moscow’s conditions for agreeing to a ceasefire is Ukraine’s formal recognition of those territories as part of Russia.
