Ukraine Urges Putin to Attend Peace Talks in Turkey
Ukrainian officials are pressing Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend peace negotiations in Turkey, saying his presence would signal a genuine intent to end the war.
“If Vladimir Putin refuses to come to Turkey, it would be a clear indication that Russia is not ready to end the conflict or engage in meaningful talks,” said Andriy Yermak, chief of staff to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The Kremlin has so far declined to confirm who will represent Russia at the meeting, scheduled to take place in Istanbul on May 15. “We are continuing preparations for the talks. That’s all I can say for now,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
When asked if he could name the Russian delegates, Peskov responded “no,” but added that details would be released “once President Putin deems it appropriate.”
Earlier this month, Putin proposed resuming direct peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul—talks that stalled in 2022. He stated that Russia remains committed to serious negotiations aimed at addressing the root causes of the conflict and emphasized that the next move rests with Ukraine.
President Zelensky later said Ukraine was open to direct dialogue but insisted that a 30-day ceasefire should precede any formal discussions. He also expressed readiness to meet Putin in Turkey, though Russia has yet to respond to the offer.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump, meanwhile, said he might consider traveling to Turkey to attend the peace summit if both leaders agree to meet in Istanbul. Trump voiced optimism that the May 15 meeting could lead to a breakthrough.
Speaking at a press conference in Greece, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned that Europe would “significantly tighten sanctions on Russia” if there is no substantial progress this week. Moscow has not yet commented on Merz’s statement.
Russia and Ukraine last held direct talks in Istanbul in March 2022, reportedly coming close to a draft agreement. However, the process collapsed before Zelensky officially ended negotiations the following month.
Diplomatic efforts are now being revived. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has recently spoken with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan to discuss the renewed proposal for direct talks between Moscow and Kyiv.
